Squirmer – May 5, 2000

It was Cinco De Mayo, and Daisy (Mark’s mom and the band’s surrogate mom) and Mark whipped up a batch of Green Enchiladas for us hungry musicians to feast on during our break. We would usually play on Friday nights after work and we’d be coming over to the studio directly from work. Eric was coming from San Francisco, I’d be coming from Palo Alto, Chris would be coming from Burlingame, Bill would be coming from South SF, and Mark would be coming from somewhere. Getting a home cooked meal was always a joy.

I did a self produced CD of this session called “It Was the Green Enchiladas”.

This was a cooking jam. The club is open. Play it loud.

Here are a few curated cuts from that night’s jam. “A Salty Salute” came to the studio through Eric, who is a big GBV fan. It ultimately became the opener for almost all of our live shows. “Hard to Handle” was another cover we played pretty frequently back in the day. Our version was always more inspired by the Dead (with maybe a pinch of the Black Crowes) than Otis but it is his song we’re covering.

“Pickles and Ice Cream” is a Chris original and a band favorite to play. The song plays along a demented Alice in Wonderland sort of tale about a couple of kids named Pickles and Ice Cream while the band jams on.

“Cissy Strut” is our take on the classic Meters track, this time with Mark back on his usual sax, and Eric takes his usual and unusual spin on the drums and absolutely crushes it.

We wind it all up with “Decide”, a track by the Feelies, which drifts into “Bill is Here” for a few moments before drifting back. We just couldn’t decide.

The music was recorded 8 tracks live into the trusty Tascam Portastudio 488, which I converted to digital in ProTools with an MBox.

I’m including a track of an instrumental jam we used to play a lot in the early days (mid nineties) called “Sticko”, which was a shortened down version of the original name of “Where’d My Stick Go?”. The original title came about because Mark dropped a drumstick in the original version and had to wing it with one stick before finding the other drumstick and kept going. Unknown date on this version, but this is pretty much the classic version of this jam. Obvious hints at Cumberland Blues throughout.
